Meet the 2025 Team!
Welcome to the Big Maggy’s world. We are a small team based in the International Finance Centre (IFC), nestled in the corner of IFC5 and we co-habit with our dear friends The Loft. Dave and his team supply the coffee, pizza and pastries to keep you full and satisfied whilst we stand ready to offer advice, support and service for your cycling, triathlon, commuting and general two (or three or four) wheeled pedalling pursuits.
Many of you know us well. Some of you know us too well. However, no doubt some of you do not yet know us at all and maybe it's better that way! But here is a little summary of the crew:
Rich is the Boss. He’s hung in there the longest so far, having joined the business in 2013. Nearly twelve glorious years in which he has gone from Mechanic to Owner! His career has gone, unlike his bike racing, from strength to strength, ultimately rising like the quality cream he is. If he keeps up this level of progression, he may even inspire himself to reach his ultimate life goal - to be an Ironman. If he doesn’t get a head cold the day before and DNF that is….
Recently Rich embarked on a Leading Growth course with Jersey Business. It seemed like a good idea at the time but now all he does is implement new strategies and ideas! We have all become busier as a result and clearly, you have been made to read this article... But it doesn’t end there… Prepare yourselves for more developments at Big Maggy’s as Rich continues to inhale more gems from his course to improve your lives and make ours more miserable!
Fun fact about Rich: He unofficially books more customers into the workshop than he does officially …… the amount of ‘Hi, shall I leave my bike here, Richard knows about it’ visitors we get is quite incredible so we made him a special T-shirt with 'Rich knows about it on the back...'. He didn't like that so much.
This is Chris
Meet Chris. Chris is wise. He is always pondering something. That’s why he looks the way he does. He brings maturity, expertise, geek-like levels of chain-waxing knowledge, organisation and above all, almost uncannily un-identifiable off-the-charts levels of dryness. Sometimes, we think he is serious when in-fact, he is mocking us without so much as a flinch! Chris joined Big Maggy’s in late 2020, having pursued a career in engineering post-Uni.
The transition from motorway bridge-building to an even more diverse role in Big Maggy’s was made in the blink of an eye. We were concerned his pangs for concrete and cones would lure him back into the lucrative world of Engineering …. So we made him co-owner. Now he’s proper stuck here!
Fun fact about Chris: Chris once dislocated his knee whilst playing the piano….. pretty strange huh.
Emily is the only grown-up in the room. Without Emily, we would probably implode. It would not be possible to find anything, including but not limited to, people’s bikes, staff, anything we have ordered, received, sold, not-sold or said ‘we were going to do’ … Rich is the boss but not really, we all know who the Boss is and it’s the person everyone is most afraid of!
Emily can set fire to your hair just by looking at you, so don't upset her, she is our glue. Most of the time….
Fun fact about Emily: Emily represented Jersey at the Island Games as a cyclist but later retired her bicycle in favour of a more relaxing less demanding endeavour. She is now an Ultra runner and ran 100 kilometres last year for fun….. hmm. If we sold cup cakes, we would be a world leading cake shop with her baking skills... We would also be fat (er).
This is Andy
Andy fights fires. But not like he used to …. Now he fixes things that break, he wheels them in and fixes them. Andy can use 178 tools all at the same time (That’s every tool in the workshop). He surrounds himself in tools and gets defensive if you ask where the 5mm allen key is when he is using it. Even if he is not actually using it. He loves nothing more than working after hours without interruptions,
so he can properly pull eBike motors apart just to see how they work… whilst his dinner is getting cold 10 miles away.
Fun fact about Andy: There are just too many… but once, after a long conversation in which he explained the complexities of his previous job, Andy said ‘If you can’t describe your job in three words .. it’s bullshit’. He is a walking 'Dad Joke'.
Tony is…….. yes still here! Tony tried to leave. He even left the country and changed his phone number. But Rich found him. He kept sending Tony things to do and eventually he gave in. Tony does whatever can be done without being in the shop. From his laptop mounted to his handlebars he works…. He works at strange times. In a strange way, but he works. If you don’t pay your bill, you will meet Tony. You don’t want to meet Tony, for many reasons. He’s irritating but he serves a purpose.
Fun fact about Tony: Tony once spent 50 kilometres chasing Rich in a gravel sportive only to realise Rich was 100 metres behind him the whole time watching him breathe out of his ears whilst shaking his head….
This is Jay
Jay is the fourth longest standing member of the Big Maggy’s crew. That’s true…. Jay started at Big Maggy’s when he was much younger and way more annoying. We ‘released’ Jay for 3 years to obtain his degree in ‘Business Management & Economics’, during which he realised his degree uniquely qualified him for a career in…….. Big Maggy’s! So back he came.... Bummer.
Jay is a talented mechanic, mountain biker and spends more than he earns on bike stuff and somehow does not starve to death. If he were on Mastermind (google it if you are under 40), his specialist chosen subject would undoubtedly be ‘part codes and specs from the Wolf Tooth catalogue’.
Fun fact about Jay: Jay is 6ft 4” ….. 10 years ago he was 4ft 6”…… True story.
Indi is the third longest surviving member of the Big Maggy’s crew. She started aged 12 initially as an unofficial contract cleaner, ensuring the stairs were free of FOD and progressing to become our first female mechanic. Now with over 12 years experience and despite her working in the finance sector Monday to Friday, remains a SPOUT of knowledge for our clients and graces us with her presence occasionally on a Saturday. Like Luke, Indi will be here forever as she needs her staff discount to survive.
Indi is a Marathon Cross-Country mountain bike racer and has/will have competed in most corners of Europe by the time you learn this fact!
Fun fact about Indi: For the first five years working at Big Maggy’s, Indi ate and drank precisely nothing…. like a human-Lizard. We are pleased to report Indi occasionally can be seen drinking water, wine, beer…. often together. She’s no longer a Lizard…
This is Nick
Nick is our most recent addition to the crew. Nick works 2 days a week for Big Maggy’s. He spends the rest of the week and waking hours steering Rock N Road, the runners world version of Big Maggy’s. How a person can achieve as much as Nick does in 7 days every week is un-fathomable. Only an Ironman could achieve this. With bags of energy (and bags under his eyes), Nick is ready to serve you with bags of enthusiasm. He is just ready, full stop. For anything.
Fun fact about Nick: Nick has a very good nose for finding aerodynamic performance gains in Triathlon. He has a very good nose for finding extra watts of performance.
But what he doesn’t have a good nose for, is directions…. Nick almost won the Granite Man Triathlon but instead, went the wrong way. Twice…. He also missed out on KONA qualification by about 0.01 of a second. But he’s not one to give up. He has joined Big Maggy’s in a bid to learn chain waxing performance enhancements from Chris…… what a team. The Thornado will find that 0.01 if it kills him.
Jacob is like the workshop dog we always wanted. If he had four legs he would be a Spaniel. Endless energy.
If there is something Jacob doesn’t know about Specialized e-mountain bikes, it’s not worth knowing. With Indi, sometimes Jacob runs Big Maggy's on a Saturday. People assume they are Richard's children just hanging out in the workshop, but rest assured, they run rings around us. They know stuff.
Fun fact about Jacob: Unlike Richard, Jacob is not scared of flying and will likely one day be a Pilot. Or a Big Maggy’s mechanic.
This is Luke
Luke is our resident talented triathlete.
He is the only triathlete with talent in the team (sorry guys. It is what it is...).
He works just enough to still qualify for his staff-discount.. He forms one of the support triplet along with Jacob and Indi, who are still young enough to remember part-codes and passwords, so we keep him around.
Luke is a precocious talent. Proper clever.
