Climate Promises
Since early 2023 we have been pushing each other to keep the pressure on our staff and customers to maximise their mutual climate pledges, through our campaign to lower emissions around our brand.
Here are the things we initiated with our campaign promise:
- To restrict the use of our parking space utilisation by staff
- To enable staff to use our shower & changing facilities in order to cycle or run to work
- To recycle all tyre and inner tube's removed from our clients' bikes
- To ensure all metals removed from bikes is recycled
How are we doing on reflection one year later since our pledge:
The Rubber Does it for Jay
Pretty darn good if we do say so ourselves!
We have significantly reduced the number of parking space utilisations, meaning our team are cycling or running to work an estimated 80% of the working days of the year.
We have had almost zero rubber (tyres and inner tubes!) deposited in a
non-recyclable bin, meaning we have shipped in excess of 500 bicycle tyres and more than 300 inner tubes in the 12 months since we began the recycling program with our UK partner' Velorim.
Chris the driving-force.
One of the things Chris really inspired us to achieve when we started the climate pledge, was to become more responsible ourselves. If we could find some middle ground where our customers were able to support this in a way that didn't hit their pockets too much, that would have been huge success. What we didn't envisage was how keen our clients were to contribute to the program. When we first offered a recycling service for tyres and tubes with a fee attached, we feared a big kick-back.
Essentially, we were giving people a choice, pay to recycle or suffer the inconvenience of having to collect and take home their old runner! However, it really surprised us how much people cared about this and how much they got on-board. Without much promotion at all, it's incredible how much rubber we've saved from landfill. It's really motivated us to push more in 2025. Maybe we can even double the volume from 2023. One shop can't change the world but if we keep pushing and influencing, maybe others will follow.
